Roseann Smith joined Onyx in 2019 and quickly became acquainted with the NDD, becoming a board member—and a fan—three years ago. “I love NDD because of the community they foster,” she says.

With the Gateway, Onyx has invested in tremendous planning and care to create a community for the downtown and for Onyx’s tenants and neighbors. The Gateway is envisioned as a destination for everyone, not just a place for those who work there. With its beautifully designed, light-filled walkways, and a plethora of eateries, cafes, and specialty stores, the Gateway welcomes everyone with comfort and style.

The concourse starts at Penn Station, and a skybridge connects the Legal Center and the Hilton. A pedestrian exiting Penn Station can walk all the way through the concourse to Mulberry Street through spacious, graceful walkways without having to go outside. Roseann’s enthusiasm for the project is palpable. “The Gateway features the biggest front door—a grand entrance to Newark. We call this entrance our jewel box. The beautiful entry leads up the stairs to our concourse level.”

More than just a walkway, the concourse is a destination in itself, loaded with culinary offerings for any palate or budget, including Brooklyn Dumpling Shop, Farinella Bakery, Chip City Cookies, and Mokbar. Serafina Wine Bar is scheduled to open by the end of 2022.

We are here to put down roots and make an investment.

The Gateway offers many benefits to the people of Newark. The hub location improves access between Penn Station and Rutgers, Seton Hall and Panasonic. The concourse and its abundance of bars and restaurants make it a powerful way to foster commerce and community among the many different types of people who live and work in the district. “Onyx is very committed to the future of Newark,” says Roseann. “We are here to put down roots and make an investment.”

Roseann, an alumna of Rutgers in Newark, is energized and optimistic about the changes she has seen in Newark and the obvious sense of community. One of her favorite examples of that community is the NDD Ambassadors. “Their dedication and pride in their work are emblematic of how we all care about this city. And their positivity makes everyone’s day better.”
